The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has made history in surgical education with the launch of the da Vinci Surgical Robot at its Skills, E-Learning and Telemedicine (SET) Facility. This has made AIIMS the first government medical school in India to provide organized training on this high-tech robotic platform.
The agreement has been made through a memorandum of understanding with Intuitive Surgical, rendering AIIMS the only institution in the country with two robot systems focused solely on education and training. Along with the recently unveiled da Vinci Surgical Robot, the SET facility currently occupies Medtronic's Hugo robotic trainer, providing an unparalleled ecosystem of skill development.

AIIMS Director Dr M Srinivas described the development as a major boost to India’s surgical innovation landscape. “Robotic surgery training that was once accessible only abroad can now be undertaken here at AIIMS,” he said. The SET facility, equipped with simulators, trainers, and manikins, allows learners to practise and refine their skills before entering operating theatres.
This initiative is positioned to advance surgical education by delivering practical exposure in a secure, simulated environment for medical students, residents, nurses, and faculty. The da Vinci platform will cater to several specialties, including urology, gynaecology, general surgery, surgical oncology, and head and neck, preparing the next generation of surgical specialists with familiarity with minimally invasive treatment options.
In bridging leading robotic technology with medical education, AIIMS New Delhi not only creates new trajectories in India, but it is also in accordance with international advances in contemporary surgical practice.
