Akums Begins Building Its First Overseas Plant in Zambia

Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. has commenced the construction of its first global manufacturing facility in Zambia, representing a significant advancement in its international expansion efforts.

The ceremonial groundbreaking was initiated at Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone on 40 acres of land where the plant will be constructed.

The upcoming Zambia Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility is anticipated to manufacture a variety of dosage forms, including tablets, capsules, liquids, injectables, topicals, and beta-lactam products.

This initiative is expected to support and assist the increasing demand for essential and life-saving medicines in Zambia and nearby regions. Over 1000 new jobs, boosting local economic, will be provided through this project.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sandeep Jain, Managing Director and Founder of Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, said the company’s vision is rooted in patient well-being and accessibility. “This partnership with the Government of Zambia represents a powerful alignment of vision to ensure that high-quality, affordable medicines reach every individual in need,” he said.

 Through advanced manufacturing practices, global quality systems, and a patient-centric approach, we aim to strengthen Zambia’s healthcare foundation while fostering regional self-reliance and innovation,” he noted. Jain emphasized that the facility would strengthen Zambia’s healthcare infrastructure while promoting self-reliance and innovation across the African continent.

A historic move toward medical self-sufficiency and national empowerment was how President Hakainde Hichilema officially opened the project. Under internationally recognized standards, the plant will manufacture medicines to serve Zambia, plus the greater SADC, COMESA region, and throughout Africa, making Zambia an emerging pharmaceutical manufacturing location.
