Alkem Laboratories has launched single-shot pre-filled syringes of Semaglutide in multiple dose strengths, with prices starting at Rs 350. The company had previously introduced reusable and disposable semaglutide injection pens in March and plans to launch vial presentations in the coming months.
The launch follows approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for manufacturing and marketing Semaglutide pre-filled syringes for the management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity, alongside diet and exercise interventions.
According to the company, the pre-filled syringes are designed to offer a ready-to-use administration format and provide an additional treatment option for patients and healthcare professionals.
Competition Intensifies in India's Weight-Loss Drug Market
Semaglutide, a once-weekly therapy used for diabetes and weight management, went off patent in India in March, leading to the entry of multiple domestic manufacturers.
While vial and pre-filled syringe formats typically contain a single dose, injection pens are designed to provide four weekly doses and are available in both fixed and adjustable strength formats.

Industry observers note that semaglutide prices have declined significantly following patent expiry, driven by increasing competition and lower active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) costs. Several pharmaceutical companies are expanding their product portfolios to strengthen their position in one of India's fastest-growing therapeutic segments.
Domestic drugmakers including Torrent Pharma and Dr. Reddy's have also entered the semaglutide market with alternative formulations, while additional launches are expected from other major pharmaceutical companies.
Growing Treatment Options for Diabetes and Obesity
With the latest launch, Alkem has expanded the range of semaglutide delivery formats available in India, offering healthcare providers greater flexibility in selecting treatment approaches based on patient needs.
Commenting on the development, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of Alkem, said that semaglutide has the potential to change how we manage metabolic disorders. With the launch of our pre-filled syringes, we are widening the choice available to doctors and patients, alongside the pen options we have already introduced. In India, where we are seeing a continuous rise in disease burden, offering multiple, practical drug delivery formats is an important step in helping more patients start and stay on the therapy.
