 FSSAI

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is planning to release an advisory to restaurants and hotels to include labels in their outlets regarding key ingredients like sugar and oil in their dishes. This is to help increase consumer awareness of calorie intake and raise awareness of obesity in India.

“FSSAI is likely to put an advisory for hotels and restaurants to put some Sugar and oil boards at their respective outlets,” a source said, adding the advisory will help diners make better choices with regard to what they eat. Another official indicated that the measure would be voluntary, but serves as a message to food businesses about how they can tie into the government’s public health ambition.

India is witnessing an immense growth of obesity and associated non-communicable diseases. A study published in The Lancet forecasted that by 2050, over 440 million Indians may be obese or overweight, highlighting the opportunity for prevention.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently underscored the role of healthy lifestyles and dietary habits. In his Independence Day speech earlier this year, he challenged families to reduce their cooking oil consumption by 10 percent, emphasizing the potential impact of individual choices on the health of the nation.

In keeping with this, the FSSAI in May, directed States and Union Territories to scale-up awareness programs and promote activities that reduce oil usage. The Advisory to the restaurant and hotel sector is anticipated to build on this momentum in a system which appears to be fast developing towards transparency in food consumption and better living in India.
