In a significant development aimed at bolstering India's medical technology (MedTech) sector, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), in conjunction with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Gates Foundation, has launched the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA)-Medical Technology.

As an initiative to promote accelerated indigenous MedTech innovation, enhance local self-sufficiency by importing less and making available advanced healthcare technology to more patients across India at lower costs.

Funding support ranging from ?5 crore to ?25 crore will be available in support of academic and R&D institutions, hospitals, startups, MSMEs and industry collaboration for projects under this mission (with exceptional circumstances considered where this value may exceed ?50 crore). Ultimately, the aim is to bring high impact medical technologies from the lab into the real world.

The initiative will focus on driving public health impact supporting technologies in key disease areas like tuberculosis, cancer, and neonatal and primary health care. It will also provide self-reliance for indigenous development and manufacturing through stronger collaboration between industry and academia.

The initiative will have broad coverage across new-to-market medical devices, diagnostic devices, artificial intelligence- and machine learning-based platforms, robotics and point-of-care diagnostics, advanced imaging systems, implants, and assistive devices.

In addition to funding, the mission will provide a foundation of support through programs, such as Patent Mitra for IP protection, MedTech Mitra for regulatory advice, and a Clinical Trial Network for validation. This is designed to position India as a global MedTech innovation hub and drive growth, access, and self-reliance in health care.
