Lupin’s latest approval for Enzalutamide tablets has again brought the Indian Pharma on spot light, turning India into a global market producing generic medicines.
Lupin has now announced that it received tentative approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for Enzalutamide tablets, 40mg, 80mg, 120mg, and 160mg.
This transition to a tentative approval validates Lupin’s research and development success, thereby increasing visibility in the complex oncology space.
Lupin’s generic drug Enzalutamide is an orally consumed, non-steroidal anti-androgen medication used to treat for various stages of advanced prostate cancer. This active drug works against testosterone, which stimulates cancer cell growth in the body. This drug also primarily focuses on castration-resistant prostate cancer. The drug works similarly to Astellas Pharma’s reference drug Xtandi. The USFDA has approved the drug with this indication in the labeling.
While the Xtandi drug is traditionally available in strengths of 40mg and 80mg, Lupin tentatively got approved for 40mg, 80mg, 120mg, and 160mg as well. These additional dosing preferences are absent with the reference drug, which gives healthcare professionals and patients enough flexibility in dosing. This tentative approval also assures the USFDA quality, safety, and efficacy requirements. However, as per reports, the product will not be launched until the patent protection and exclusivity of expiry are issued along with the final approval.

This approval elevates Lupin’s portfolio in the US generic medicine market. Further in the future, when the patent expires in 2027-28, sales will speed up, reinforcing its long-term growth strategy.
The company will continue to focus on expanding complex generic drugs, with different dosage capacities, enabling flexible options for both healthcare professionals and consumers. Such new drug approvals will benefit India further in the long term by accelerated access to life-saving treatments, lowered healthcare costs, and will help boost India’s domestic pharmaceutical Industry.
