Karnataka Orders Maternity Hospitals to Have Blood Bank Tie-Ups

Karnataka has just ordered a major change in maternity hospital rules to save lives during childbirth. The state government now requires every maternity hospital to have advance blood bank tie?ups and ensure key doctors stay on site so mothers get fast emergency care.

The new norms aim to plug gaps exposed in recent maternal health audits and stop preventable maternal deaths from delays in care. Under the updated order, all public health institutions that provide delivery care must secure formal agreements with at least two to three government or licensed private blood banks.

This ensures quick blood supply and transport in emergencies, a critical part of maternal and newborn care. Delay in accessing blood can be deadly during postpartum bleeding. District health officials have been tasked with tracking compliance and making sure the system works when needed.

The state also tightened rules on doctor availability. Specialist doctors, especially obstetricians and gynecologists, must now live at their designated hospitals instead of commuting from far away. If a specialist is reported absent, they must log attendance twice a day to prove they are present for emergencies. The government specifically barred moving gynecologists from hospitals with only one specialist to camps or other programs, to keep maternity units staffed.

Another key change is about digital tracking of labor. Karnataka has reiterated that all deliveries in public hospitals must use the ARC partograph system to monitor labor progress in real time. This tool helps doctors spot complications early. The government warned that failing to follow this rule will be seen as serious negligence.

Health officials say these moves will strengthen maternal health safety across the state, making maternity care more reliable and responsive in emergencies. With better access to blood and doctors always ready, the risk of deaths linked to childbirth complications should drop quickly.
