L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) is recognised as one of the forefront global centres for corneal neurotization surgery that has performed over 40 surgeries with surgical success rates similar to other established centres worldwide. The ophthalmology care major states that it provides new hope for patients with neurotrophic keratitis; a condition that has traditionally been treated only with palliative care.
Corneal neurotization is an advanced microsurgical technique aimed at restoring sensation to the cornea that can be devoid of its innate nerve supply. If the cornea is without sensation, the eye is unable to appreciate irritation or injury and cannot activate natural protective mechanisms (e.g. blinking and tearing). Loss of corneal sensation can happen for a variety of reasons, including congenital issues, trauma, or nerve trauma during neurosurgery.
LVPEI's approach to corneal neurotization is unique on a global scale because of a combination of skills, technological innovation , and the clinical trails of the technique, states the communication note. In the past, supportive methods were the sole way to treat neurotrophic keratitis. According to the note, LVPEI's neurotization now provides a long-term, restorative approach, shifting the focus from symptom treatment to long-lasting rehabilitation.

We are optimistic with the positive surgical outcomes so far. In most cases, marked improvements have been observed in tear film stability, ocular surface health and corneal clarity. These improvements in the healthcare landscape , have meant that patients can taper use of intensive preservative-free lubricants, and in some cases, that tarsorrhaphy can be avoided that was previously required. Patients have also been able to rely less frequently on surface-support therapies. Six to 12 months postsurgery, in vivo confocal microscopy revealed nerve regeneration in the cornea, indicating that nerve growth took place, the communication note said.
