Maxivision Super Speciality Eye Hospitals (‘Maxivision’), one of India's fastest-growing eye care providers, announced its strategic expansion in Chennai with the launch of 10 eye hospitals/vision centres across Chennai.
The hospital and vision centre was inaugurated by Mr. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MS Dhoni) - former Team India skipper, in the presence of Dr. GSK Velu, Chairman & Managing Director of Maxivision Eye Hospitals group and Dr. Kasu Prasad Reddy Co- Chairman of Maxivision Eye Hospitals group. MS Dhoni also launched SiLK Elita- Chennai’s first flapless, blade-free laser vision correction procedure- offering a pain-free experience, next-day recovery, and minimal dry-eye risk at its Anna Nagar premises.
The hospitals are also equipped for robotic femto-laser cataract surgery, advanced diagnostics for retina, cornea, and glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy treatment, paediatric ophthalmology, and corneal transplantation. This strategic expansion directly addresses the city’s escalating burden of cataract, glaucoma, and lifestyle-driven vision disorders.
Dr GSK Velu, Chairman & Managing Director of Maxivision Super Speciality Eye Hospitals, said, “It is long-term overdue for us, and we are pleased to arrive in Chennai, where Maxivision’s corporate headquarters is based. Today marks a strategic step forward in expanding our footprint in the high-demand, high-potential market of Chennai."
"Our Chennai grand launch by MS Dhoni is aligned with our long-term vision to build a strong, decentralised ophthalmic infrastructure that can effectively address the growing burden of cataract, retina, glaucoma, and several other vision disorders. It also strengthens our talent ecosystem by creating avenues for ophthalmologists, optometrists, and allied professionals to thrive within their local communities. With this expansion, Maxivision reinforces its commitment to shaping the future of eye care delivery in Chennai and Tamil Nadu,” he added.
Dr. Shibu Varkey, Regional Medical Director of Maxivision Super Speciality Eye Hospitals, added, “Our mission is to bring advanced, accessible eye care to underserved and middle-income communities across Tamil Nadu. With state-of-the-art technology and a strong focus on early diagnosis and preventive care, we aim to reduce the region’s long-term disease burden and establish Tamil Nadu as a hub for clinical excellence and ophthalmic skill development. The centres will serve as the first point of contact for early diagnosis of conditions like diabetic retinopathy, cataract, and glaucoma, helping reduce the long-term disease burden through timely intervention and education.”

Dr. B Ganesh, Clinical & Academic Director, Maxivision Eye Hospitals, said, “The launch of 10 Super Speciality Eye Hospitals across Chennai marks a significant milestone in our mission to make world-class eye care accessible to every corner of the Greater Chennai region. We will start several academic initiatives to train Ophthalmologists, Optometrists , Counsellors & Para medical professionals as part of CSR initiatives across Tamilnadu "
Mr. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Captain of Chennai Super Kings and former Captain of Team India, added, “It gives me great joy to be a part of Maxivision’s journey as they expand their footprint in Chennai with the launch of these centres across Chennai. Vision is something we often take for granted -until it begins to fade. What I truly admire about Maxivision is its commitment to delivering cutting-edge, blade-free eye treatments that are both accessible and affordable. With innovations like SiLK Elita, they are helping people see life more clearly, safely, and confidently. I am happy to have inaugurated these ten centres in my favourite city of Chennai, benefiting the people of Chennai.”
Tamil Nadu faces a mounting ophthalmic burden, with Chennai at its epicentre-reporting a cataract prevalence of 40–60%, which doubles the state average, driven by a dense, ageing population and rising lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Post-COVID, pediatric vision issues, dry eye, keratoconus, and asthenopia have surged due to excessive screen time.
As the “Medical Capital of India,” Chennai attracts patients from across South India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia, offering unmatched access to skilled ophthalmologists. Maxivision’s strategic expansion brings cutting-edge eye care closer to these high-need populations, boosting timely intervention, strengthening regional infrastructure, and fostering healthcare employment across Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Telangana.
Maxivision Super Speciality Eye Hospitals signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu last year to launch Project Velicham, committing Rs 400 crores over four years to expand eye care infrastructure across the state. As part of this initiative, Maxivision will set up 30-plus eye hospitals and 100-plus vision centres. The project aims to deliver advanced, affordable eye care to underserved regions, while also generating employment and enhancing ophthalmic training and research in Tamil Nadu.
