Nethradhama & Sun Pharma Hold Cataract Awareness Cyclothon, India Pharma Outlook

Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, in association with Sun Pharma, organized a Cataract Awareness Cyclothon to promote early diagnosis and management of cataract. Cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness in India.

Over 75 cyclists, including healthcare professionals and relatives of eye donors from Shraddha Eye Care, participated in the event flagged off by RK Gupta (Trustee, Koshika Foundation) and Dr. Sri Ganesh (Chairman and Managing Director, Nethradhama). The riders rode through the key areas of Jayanagar, Bengaluru, to promote proactive eye care.

The National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey notes that cataracts are responsible for more than 66.2% of blindness in India. The good thing is cataracts are treated by way of cataract surgery, but because of lack of awareness, many cases of cataracts are not diagnosed. This is especially true with the rural area and among underserved populations.

“Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness, yet they preventable with timely treatment. However, due to a lack of awareness, thousands continue to lose their sight unnecessarily. This is especially true in rural and underserved communities where access to care is limited or delayed. With initiatives like the Cataract Awareness Cyclothon, our goal is to take the message of proactive eye care to the streets — encouraging people to look out for early signs and seek timely medical attention. Awareness, combined with access, is key to eliminating avoidable blindness,” said Dr.  Ganesh.
