German inks and coatings leader Siegwerk has introduced a new range of mineral oil-free inks to India's pharmaceutical packaging sector, thus making a major move towards safer and more compliant packaging solutions.
This new direction comes after the company invested ?350 crores in India to expand research, manufacturing, and operations that promote sustainability.
One of the major sources of mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOHs) in packaging is traditional printing inks, which may lead to MOHs migrating into packaged products, thus posing potential health risks, especially from mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAHs).
The new ink systems from Siegwerk do not have mineral oils as intentionally added substances, which in turn facilitates product safety as well as assistance to Indian exporters in meeting global packaging standards.
“As a company that is always on the lookout for safety and sustainability, we recognize packaging materials as the main stay of product integrity,” said Ashish Pradhan, President, Siegwerk Asia. "Our mineral oil-free inks present Indian pharma brands with a standard-compliant, globally harmonized alternative.”

While other countries are enforcing stricter MOH regulations, in India there are currently no specific regulations for UV inks used in pharmaceuticals. Siegwerk intends to interact with authorities and industry associations to facilitate the implementation of more stringent safety standards.
Siegwerk India established its operations in Bhiwadi (Rajasthan) in 2006 and over the last ten years, the company has nearly tripled its revenue to more than Rs 1000 crore.
The company is also investing in the development of circular economy coatings for recyclable multilayer packaging, which is possible due to the support from global competence centers in India and Europe.
