POSITROSCINT: Driving Excellence in Pet Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturing for Precision Cancer Diagnostics

The evolution of cancer diagnostics is increasingly being driven by molecular imaging technologies that enable clinicians to detect diseases at earlier stages and make more informed treatment decisions.

Among these technologies, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) has emerged as one of the most effective diagnostic tools, supported by radiopharmaceuticals that reveal biological activity at the cellular level rather than simply identifying anatomical abnormalities. As oncology continues to shift toward precision medicine, the demand for high-quality PET radiotracers has grown significantly.

Operating in this highly specialized segment, POSITROSCINT has established itself as a dedicated manufacturer of PET radiotracers serving nuclear medicine facilities across North India. Built on deep healthcare experience and a clear understanding of the operational challenges faced by diagnostic centers, the company combines advanced manufacturing infrastructure, stringent regulatory compliance, and time-sensitive logistics to ensure uninterrupted access to essential radiopharmaceuticals.

Today, POSITROSCINT is playing an important role in strengthening India's molecular imaging ecosystem while supporting hospitals and clinicians in delivering timely and accurate cancer diagnosis.

Building on Decades of Healthcare Experience

POSITROSCINT's journey is rooted in an extensive healthcare background rather than a standalone manufacturing venture. Led by Gaurav Aggarwal, Director, the organization draws upon years of experience across multiple healthcare domains, including medical imaging equipment, diagnostic centers, and hospital operations.

After completing his B.Tech in Electronics and Communication, Gaurav Aggarwal gained international exposure through an MBA in Singapore and Dubai, followed by consulting experience within the medical sector. Returning to India in 2014, he joined the family business, which had already built a strong presence in supplying CT scanners, MRI systems, PET-CT equipment, diagnostic services, and hospital care.

The idea behind POSITROSCINT emerged from firsthand operational challenges. While operating their own diagnostic centers, the team frequently encountered delays in procuring FDG, the most commonly used PET radiotracer, from external suppliers. Since PET scans require patients to arrive fasting and undergo imaging within carefully scheduled windows, delays often resulted in inconvenience and disrupted patient care.

Recognizing the growing burden of cancer and the need for reliable radiotracer availability, the organization embarked on establishing its own manufacturing facility. Although the project required nearly five years to complete due to the pandemic, commercial production commenced approximately two years ago, marking an important milestone in the company's journey.

Delivering Reliable Radiopharmaceutical Solutions for Oncology

At the heart of POSITROSCINT's portfolio is Fluoro Deoxy Glucose (FDG), the most widely used PET radiotracer for cancer detection. FDG enables clinicians to identify abnormal metabolic activity associated with tumors, supporting earlier diagnosis and improved treatment planning.

The nature of PET radiopharmaceuticals demands extraordinary operational precision. FDG has a half-life of approximately 110 minutes, meaning its radioactivity decreases by half within that period. Every stage, from production and quality testing to transportation, patient administration, and imaging, is therefore governed by strict timelines.

“Beyond FDG, POSITROSCINT is also preparing to expand its portfolio of specialized PET radiotracers that address specific oncology applications. These include tracers such as PSMA for prostate cancer and F-DOPA for brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, reflecting the broader transition toward precision diagnostics and disease-specific molecular imaging.

As personalized oncology continues to evolve, the company aims to broaden its capabilities in line with emerging clinical requirements and new radiopharmaceutical developments”, speaks Gaurav Aggarwal, Director,

Today, POSITROSCINT supplies PET radiotracers to more than 40 nuclear medicine facilities, supporting diagnostic procedures for approximately 600 to 700 patients every day, including leading healthcare institutions across North India.

Precision Manufacturing Where Every Minute Matters

Manufacturing PET radiopharmaceuticals differs significantly from conventional pharmaceutical production. Product quality, regulatory compliance, and logistics are inseparable because the medicines begin losing RADIOACTIVITY immediately after production.

POSITROSCINT operates under the regulatory oversight of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), ensuring compliance with stringent safety and manufacturing standards. Every production batch undergoes comprehensive quality control testing before release, with laboratory verification completed prior to dispatch.

Distribution operations begin as early as 4:00 a.m., allowing products to reach hospitals and diagnostic centers within the narrow clinical window required for patient imaging. Radiopharmaceuticals are transported through dedicated vehicles and, where necessary, via air cargo using specially designed lead-shielded containers that ensure both radiation safety and product integrity throughout transit.

The company also operates in an environment where operational continuity is critical. Any disruption in cyclotron operations or production infrastructure has immediate implications, not only for business operations but also for hundreds of patients scheduled for diagnostic procedures on the same day.

This responsibility has shaped POSITROSCINT's operational philosophy, placing equal emphasis on reliability, preparedness, and patient-centric execution.

Strengthening India's Molecular Imaging Ecosystem

POSITROSCINT has established its manufacturing facility with modern technology capable of supporting current clinical requirements while remaining adaptable to future advancements. The company actively monitors global developments by participating in international conferences and engaging with emerging technologies across the nuclear medicine landscape.

“As artificial intelligence, automation, and next-generation radiotracers become increasingly integrated into healthcare, POSITROSCINT intends to incorporate innovations that strengthen manufacturing efficiency and diagnostic capabilities” adds Gaurav Aggarwal.

Looking ahead, the company's strategic focus extends beyond expanding its product portfolio. Plans are already underway to establish an additional cyclotron facility outside North India, enabling broader geographic access to PET radiotracers and supporting the growing demand for molecular imaging services across the country.

By combining healthcare experience, advanced manufacturing, regulatory excellence, and a patient-first philosophy, POSITROSCINT is positioning itself as a dependable partner in India's evolving precision oncology landscape.
