AIIMS Delhi Secures Approval for Major Critical Care Capacity Boost

AIIMS Delhi secures approval for a major critical care capacity boost that will expand specialized services at India’s premier public hospital.

The Delhi Urban Art Commission clears the building plan for a dedicated critical care and infectious diseases block along with a multi-level car parking facility at the JPN Apex Trauma Centre.

This long-awaited addition will give seriously ill and infectious patients faster access to specialized beds and ease chronic pressure on existing emergency and ICU facilities.

The project forms part of AIIMS’s broader infrastructure expansion and directly addresses overcrowding in high-acuity care.

DUAC Clears Revised Proposal

The Delhi Urban Art Commission grants approval after examining a revised proposal that the Central Public Works Department submitted through the Online Proposal Assessment and Approval System. The commission earlier withheld clearance in September 2024 and sought modifications to the design and planning.

CPWD responded with updated drawings, photographs and detailed replies to the earlier observations. DUAC then clears the proposal subject to specific conditions on design, parking, utility screening and sustainability.

Key Conditions and Design Directives

DUAC sets clear requirements that project authorities must meet:

• All parking provisions must conform to applicable norms and guidelines.
• Service equipment, diesel generator sets, exhaust pipes, water tanks, air-conditioning units, solar panels, plumbing and rainwater pipes must receive adequate screening or camouflage.
• The project must maintain urban aesthetics and architectural character while remaining compatible with the surrounding built environment.
• Facade treatment, materials and overall built form must meet the commission’s review standards.
• Authorities must install a public artwork of appropriate scale within the complex; any change to the approved artwork design will require prior DUAC clearance.

The commission also suggests mounting solar panels on a suitably designed structural frame, subject to building bye-laws. Such an arrangement can improve space utilization, ease maintenance, provide shading and reduce heat load.

Capacity Gain for High-Acuity Care

The new critical care and infectious diseases block will sit at the JPN Apex Trauma Centre. AIIMS documents already list this facility among projects awaiting execution. Once built, the block will add specialized capacity for patients who need intensive monitoring and isolation.

This expansion will reduce the burden on existing emergency and intensive care units that currently handle both trauma and infectious cases under severe space constraints.

The multi-level parking facility will simultaneously improve access and circulation around the trauma center. Better parking arrangements will support smoother patient movement and reduce congestion in the surrounding areas.

The approval advances AIIMS Delhi’s larger program of infrastructure upgrades. By clearing the critical care and infectious diseases block together with the parking structure, DUAC enables the hospital to move forward on a project that has remained on the waiting list.

The conditions attached to the clearance ensure that the new buildings meet both functional and aesthetic standards expected in a dense urban setting. AIIMS Delhi now holds the necessary urban-art clearance to expand its critical and infectious-disease capacity. The dedicated block at the JPN Apex Trauma Centre will deliver additional specialized beds, while the multi-level parking will improve site logistics.
