Covid precautions have returned to focus after Andhra Pradesh reported two Covid deaths and eight active Covid cases.
The development has prompted neighboring states to increase surveillance and testing. Covid precautions are also being strengthened ahead of Odisha's Rath Yatra, even as health officials say there is no reason to panic.
Authorities have stressed that the current variants are not considered highly dangerous. They have also urged people to stay alert and follow basic safety measures.
The Union health ministry said it is closely monitoring the situation. Officials said such sporadic Covid cases are reported every year. They added that there is no indication of a severe outbreak at this stage.
The Andhra Pradesh health department has asked government hospitals to remain prepared. Hospitals have been directed to keep isolation wards, ICU beds, and medical support ready.
Kadapa District Medical and Health Officer Ravi Babu said both people who died had serious underlying health conditions. He also said 40 people were tested over the past few days. All their test results came back negative.

According to media reports, Odisha has instructed hospitals to test every patient admitted with Severe Acute Respiratory Illness. Hospitals will also test at least five percent of Influenza-Like Illness cases for Covid.
Tamil Nadu has also advised vulnerable groups to stay cautious. The advisory covers elderly people, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases, and those with weak immune systems.
The state has continued routine pre-operative Covid testing for patients with severe respiratory illness.

Health authorities are monitoring the XFG variant and BA.3.2 variant. However, experts said there is no evidence that these variants are more dangerous than recent strains.
According to the WHO, around 45,000 Covid cases have been reported worldwide over the past three months. The global test positivity rate remains low at 1.2 percent.
Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the Indian Medical Association's National Covid Task Force, said the public should not panic. He said widespread immunity from vaccination and previous infections continues to offer protection.
He also said every Covid variant detected since early 2022 has evolved from the milder Omicron strain. No aggressive or highly lethal variant has been identified in the past four years.
Health officials continue to stress that preparedness, early testing, and responsible behavior remain the best ways to manage the current situation without panic.
