Biocon has entered the US eye drug market with the commercial launch of Yesafili, its aflibercept biosimilar to Eylea.
The launch marks another milestone for Biocon Biologics in the global biosimilars business. It also expands access to affordable treatment for patients with serious retinal diseases across the United States.
The launch follows the product's FDA approval as an interchangeable biosimilar. This status allows pharmacists to substitute the medicine for the reference product, where state laws permit. The approval also strengthens Biocon's position in one of the world's largest biologics markets.
The company said the launch is expected to improve patient access while supporting healthcare providers with another treatment option.
Yesafili is approved for treating several eye conditions that can lead to vision loss.
These include:
The medicine is a biosimilar version of Regeneron's blockbuster drug Eylea 2 mg. It offers comparable quality, safety, and effectiveness.
Biocon said nearly 20 million adults in the United States live with retinal diseases. Many of these patients require long-term treatment. The company believes its latest launch can improve access to biologic therapy at a lower cost.
"The launch of Yesafili in the US marks an important step in strengthening our presence in ophthalmology and builds on our FDA approval as one of the first interchangeable biosimilars to Eylea," said Shreehas Tambe, CEO & MD, Biocon.

The FDA approval was supported by data from the Phase III INSIGHT clinical study. The trial compared Yesafili with the reference medicine. It demonstrated similar efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics, and immunogenicity.
The product also received interchangeable designation from the FDA. This is an important advantage in the US biosimilars market. It can help increase adoption by healthcare providers and patients.
The commercial launch became possible after Biocon reached a settlement agreement with Regeneron. The agreement cleared the way for market entry in the United States.
The United States remains the largest market for biosimilars worldwide. Ophthalmology is also one of its fastest-growing therapy segments.
Aflibercept is among the highest-selling biologic medicines globally. Entering this segment gives Biocon access to a significant commercial opportunity.
The launch also strengthens Biocon Biologics' expanding portfolio of biosimilar products. The company continues to focus on increasing patient access to advanced biologic medicines across global markets.
Industry experts have identified the aflibercept launch as one of the company's important growth drivers. The product is expected to support revenue growth while expanding Biocon's presence in the ophthalmology segment.
