The government has initiated a single platform for accessing drug-related information; the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare has Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, launched the Drug Registry.
As medicines are one of the most critical elements in the healthcare system, most often the same drug is alleged to appear with a different name and labeling. It also creates problems in clinical decision-making, giving out prescriptions, and in supply chain management as well.
This led the Union Ministry to form the Drug Registry. Thereby overcoming this gap and will bring all medicine-related information together into one single platform.
This development is brought under the digital initiative of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). This ministry says this will serve as a platform providing a single truth on medicines in India, which also enables consistent identification, storage, and exchange of drug usage by healthcare units.

Therefore, it implies that Drug Registry is a unified, standardized platform that provides drug-related information. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is also building efficient health ecosystem through other registries as well, such as:
The drug registry has been developed in collaboration with the Central Drug Control Organization and the National Resource Centre for EHR Standards (NRCeS). Therefore, the platform also leverages international standards such as SNOMED CT, which enables interoperability and semantic consistency across platforms.
Currently, the Drug Registry platform comprises more than 123,000 branded drugs, 10,000-plus generic drugs, and 29,000-plus substance-related information and data sources. The platform will enable users to search for generic medicines with brand name, active substance, and manufacturer details through the Drug Registry platform.
It also plans to integrate with Hospital Management Information Systems, e-prescription platforms, Doctor Appointment applications, and ABDM complaint managements. The registry is also standardized by drug codes that will cover generic medicines, branded medicines, and other substances.
This government initiative arrives with a lot of hope about how effectively it will help deliver healthcare-related services. This will reduce the hurdles in understanding and finding the exact medicine required.
It also provides open API’s for seamless integration, thereby enabling interoperability. Therefore, the Drug Registry platform shall enable transparency and easy access to drug information across the nation, serving as a stronger digital backbone for India’s healthcare future.
