India’s H1N1 cases continue to draw attention as more states strengthen surveillance and hospital preparedness. Jharkhand is now the latest state to step up its response after eight people tested positive for H1N1.
The development adds to recent alerts from Delhi and Haryana. It also comes as demand for flu vaccines and influenza testing rises across the country.
The Jharkhand Health Department placed the state on high alert after eight H1N1 infections were confirmed. Eleven samples were tested at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi. Eight samples returned positive results.
Health Minister Irfan Ansari held a review meeting with senior health officials on Saturday. The meeting included Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar, medical college heads, and district civil surgeons.
Officials were directed to maintain strict surveillance and report suspected cases quickly. The state is also monitoring Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases.
The state has also urged people not to panic. Officials said early detection and timely treatment can help manage most infections.

Jharkhand’s response follows a series of H1N1 cases and preparedness measures reported in northern India. Delhi recorded 138 new H1N1 infections in 24 hours by August 27. This took its 2026 tally to 2,446. The city also reported 3,177 Influenza-A cases.
Delhi hospitals were asked to maintain isolation beds and strengthen testing capacity. Larger hospitals were told to keep at least 10 isolation beds ready. Haryana also expanded influenza testing after rising cases in neighboring Delhi. The state ordered testing for every SARI patient. At least 5 percent of ILI patients must also undergo influenza testing.
Hospitals in Haryana were also asked to keep ventilators, critical-care facilities, oseltamivir, PPE kits, and N95 masks ready. Meanwhile, Delhi’s H1N1 situation has continued to develop. A report published on August 31 said the city recorded 199 new cases. The seasonal tally reached 3,006 cases.
The rise in influenza activity is affecting preventive healthcare and diagnostics. Flu vaccine sales in India were nearly three times higher than last year. Demand also more than doubled compared with July. Some cities have reported supply constraints. Tata 1mg, Apollo Homecare, and PharmEasy have expanded at-home flu vaccination services. Manisha Mishra, Vice-President and Lead of Specialty Pharma at Tata 1mg, said demand was around three times higher across major cities.
The 2026-27 flu vaccine has also been updated based on World Health Organization recommendations. Influenza testing demand is rising as well. Molbio Diagnostics has reported stronger orders for rapid molecular testing solutions. These tests can detect influenza A, influenza B, and subtypes such as H3.
Experts have advised people to remain cautious, especially those at higher risk of complications. These include older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with serious chronic conditions. The latest Jharkhand flu alert shows that state-level preparedness is expanding as influenza activity remains under close watch across India.
