India’s MedTech industry is entering a new growth phase, driven by manufacturing, innovation, global partnerships, and rising healthcare demand.
The country is moving beyond its traditional dependence on imported medical devices by strengthening local production, attracting investments, and building capabilities.
Government policy support, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, and international collaborations are helping create a stronger MedTech ecosystem.
At the same time, artificial intelligence, digital health, connected devices, and advanced engineering are expanding the sector’s technology base.
These developments position India to become a competitive global hub for medical technology, innovation, manufacturing, and healthcare solutions.
Artificial intelligence is becoming a key technology in India’s MedTech industry as healthcare providers and medical-device companies look to improve diagnosis, treatment planning, monitoring, and access to specialist care.
Union Health Minister J P Nadda recently addressed AI in MedTech, Revolutionizing Healthcare through Artificial Intelligence. This identifies five priorities for accelerating responsible AI adoption, data integration, regulatory clarity, infrastructure development, talent building, and ethical AI deployment. The report positions MedTech as one of India’s most immediate opportunities for scaling AI because medical devices can embed specialist capabilities and extend quality healthcare to underserved areas.
India’s MedTech industry is gaining momentum through policy support, global partnerships, domestic manufacturing, R&D, digital health, and AI. Recent moves show growing capabilities across the medical technology value chain.
Together, these moves show India’s MedTech industry shifting from conventional device manufacturing toward a broader ecosystem built around manufacturing, R&D, AI, digital health, investment, and global partnerships.

India’s MedTech growth push faces a regulatory challenge as 11 medical-device industry associations oppose the draft Drugs, Medical Devices and Cosmetics Bill, 2026. The groups argue that the proposed framework remains too pharma-centric and does not adequately reflect the different technologies, risk classifications, manufacturing processes, and product life cycles of medical devices. They have called for a separate medical-device law and a dedicated regulatory authority.
The pushback comes as the government works to strengthen domestic manufacturing, attract investment, expand R&D, promote AI-enabled devices, and position India as a global MedTech hub. Addressing these concerns could therefore become important for ensuring that regulatory clarity supports rather than slows India’s ongoing MedTech expansion. A proportionate, risk-based framework could help balance patient safety with innovation, investment and industry growth.
MedTech innovation now has the opportunity to move beyond conventional medical-device manufacturing and contribute to building a globally competitive innovation ecosystem. Manufacturing can strengthen domestic capacity, while R&D can create products designed for both Indian and international healthcare needs.
AI and digital health can improve device capabilities and healthcare delivery, while sustained investment can expand infrastructure, talent, and technology development. Stronger regulation can further support innovation, safety, and global market access.
Together, manufacturing, R&D, AI, digital health, investment, and regulation can create a stronger MedTech ecosystem. India’s larger opportunity lies in becoming a hub for medical-device design, engineering, AI-enabled medical technologies, clinical innovation, and exports. Building these capabilities can help the country shift from an import-dependent market to a technology-driven MedTech powerhouse serving both domestic and global healthcare needs.
