  • Fijian health minister acknowledges India’s role in improving access to quality medicines
  • The collaboration strengthens India’s global image as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’

The Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) was refurbished to consider as a gold standard and taken to the extent of benchmarking by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) through the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MoHMS Fiji where the standard established in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) is used as a reference standard for issuing of MA applications of the Indian pharmaceutical exports to Fiji. It is India’s pharmaceutical reach into the South Pacific, with quicker regulatory approvals and freer markets.

“Fiji is an island nation and it is difficult for us to access the latest and best medicine and medical products,” said the Fijian Health and Medical Services Minister Rosy Akbar, adding, “Now we can standardize patented drugs and generic drugs produced in India, if they conform and in certain cases are made to Fijian regulations.” This confluence aims to protect the safety, effectiveness, and quality control systems.

Raja Bhanu K., Director General, Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil), India, described the agreement as historic and attributed it to positioning India as a global source of good quality medicines and paving the way for expanded regulatory cooperation and commerce in the region.

To assist exporters during this window of opportunity, Pharmexcil and the High Commission of India have organized a webinar on 3rd June 2025. The presentation will give an overview of the regulatory environment of Fiji, the market authorisation process, and future trade prospects. Raja Bhanu, Suneet Mehta (High Commissioner to Fiji), and MoHMS officials of Fiji are delivering presentations in the key speaker's position.

Such a formation not only assists in projecting the pharma exports of the country but also enables it to realize its dream of emerging as the pharmacy of the world through strength in association, which would raise the global pharma standards.
