An innovation in Space Medicine has been made through the partnership of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST),and the Department of Space (DoS). All three institutions have come together to make an advancement in Space Medicine and its application in India by signing the ‘Framework Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Space Medicine’ (MoU).
“This framework MoU between ISRO and SCTIMST will lead to cooperation in the niche field of space medicine which will benefit the national human space program as well as spur innovations and developments in the fields of Human Physiological Studies, Behavioural Health Studies, Biomedical Support Systems, Radiation Biology and Medicine, Countermeasures for improving Human Health and Performance in Space Environment, Telemedicine and Communication Protocols and Crew Medical Kit for Space Missions. The program will create opportunities for studies and experiments, especially in the field of space medicine,” ISRO said in a statement.
ISRO is planning to offer a national endeavor through its Gaganyan- the Indian Human Space Programme. Through this program, the space agency would be offering special opportunities in the fields of human health research, microgravity research, space medicine and space biology of national agencies, academia and industry.
The chairman of ISRO highlighted that such special endeavors increase the health of humans in future space missions. Therefore human research in the space environment can enhance the nation’s capacity in future missions.
