Drug Resistance is becoming harder to manage as bacteria stop responding to commonly used antibiotics. Wockhardt is now targeting this challenge through a new scientific learning platform.
The company has launched the Wockhardt Antibiotic Academy to promote smarter antibiotic use among healthcare professionals.
The drug resistance challenge requires more than new medicines. Doctors also need updated evidence to make the right treatment choices for each patient. The Academy will provide registered medical professionals across India with a platform for medical education, scientific discussions and clinical experience sharing.
The Academy takes a patient-level approach to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It will focus on decisions that can directly affect treatment outcomes.
Dr. Habil Khorakiwala, Founder Chairman, Wockhardt, said the fight against resistance needs both new antibiotics and stronger scientific discussions. He stressed the importance of choosing the right antibiotic for the right patient at the right time. He also said the Academy will support evidence-based treatment and greater awareness of resistance.
Dr. Subramaniam Swaminathan, President of the Clinical Infectious Diseases Society, India, said guidelines alone cannot solve AMR. Treatment decisions made for individual patients also matter. He noted that clinical practices continue to change as new evidence emerges. This includes developments in diagnosis, dosing and treatment strategies.

Antimicrobial resistance remains a major public health concern worldwide. In India, multidrug-resistant infections are estimated to cause around 10 lakh deaths every year. The scale of the problem makes antimicrobial stewardship increasingly important. Doctors must balance effective treatment with responsible antibiotic use.
Wockhardt plans to make the Academy a nationwide scientific platform. It will bring together clinicians, researchers and other healthcare stakeholders. The company also plans interactions with national and international experts. These experts will cover infectious diseases, AMR and antimicrobial stewardship.

Wockhardt is a research-driven pharmaceutical and biotechnology company. It focuses on antibacterial medicines for difficult-to-treat infections. Its drug discovery program has received Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) status from the US FDA. The designation covers six antibacterial programs targeting both Gram-positive and Gram-negative infections.
