The foundation of Suria Eye Products is closely connected to extensive work in pharmaceutics and advanced drug delivery

Ophthalmic drug delivery remains one of the more demanding areas of pharmaceutical formulation. Unlike conventional dosage forms, an eye drop must overcome blinking, tear turnover, nasolacrimal drainage and the corneal epithelial barrier before its active ingredient can reach the intended site.
Conventional topical formulations therefore often offer limited residence time and bioavailability, creating a need for delivery systems that can improve drug retention, absorption and therapeutic performance. The growing burden of dry-eye disease, ageing populations and prolonged digital-screen exposure is further strengthening the case for more effective ophthalmic formulation solutions.
Against this backdrop, Suria Eye Products is translating advanced pharmaceutical research into innovative ocular drug-delivery approaches. The company is focused on developing dual-drug ophthalmic formulations based on a nanocapsule platform and bringing sophisticated drug-delivery science closer to practical therapeutic applications.

From Pharmaceutics Research to Ophthalmic Innovation
The foundation of Suria Eye Products is closely connected to extensive work in pharmaceutics and advanced drug delivery. Early exposure to the limitations of conventional drug delivery highlighted a fundamental challenge in ophthalmic therapy: the eye's natural defence mechanisms can rapidly remove an instilled formulation before adequate drug absorption occurs. This led to a research focus on technologies capable of extending ocular residence time and improving bioavailability, including nanosized emulsions, nanocapsules, and in-situ gelling systems.
The company's leadership team of Founder and Director Tamilvanan Shunmugaperumal and Co-founder and Director Suriaprabha Marchan brings significant academic and research experience to this journey, with a portfolio spanning 109 publications, 15 authored books, 8 patents, 4 copyrights, and 53 conference contributions. Research interests extend beyond ocular delivery to the application of nanosized emulsions and nanocapsules in areas such as rheumatoid arthritis, androgenetic alopecia, and endometriosis. This breadth of drug-delivery expertise provides an important scientific foundation for Suria Eye Products as it moves from research-led formulation development toward commercial pharmaceutical applications.
A clear objective drove the transition from academia to entrepreneurship: bridge the gap between sophisticated drug-delivery research and accessible, practical therapeutics. The ?50 lakh BIRAC BIG grant provided an important platform for advancing this research concept toward a viable pharmaceutical startup, helping create a pathway from laboratory innovation to product development. The BioNEST Incubation Center at NIPER Guwahati has also supported the startup's journey from research to innovation.
Re-engineering the Conventional Eye Drop
At the heart of Suria Eye Products' approach is its core-shell nanocapsule engineering strategy. The formulation is designed to co-deliver two drug molecules with different physicochemical characteristics within a single delivery architecture. This is particularly relevant when conventional formulations struggle to combine compounds with contrasting solubility profiles.
The nanocapsule platform uses a polymeric shell that protects the active ingredients while controlling their release and interaction with the ocular surface. By incorporating two therapeutic molecules into one formulation, Suria Eye Products is pursuing a synergistic approach to inflammation management rather than relying solely on a single mechanism of action.
“The broader objective is to address both dynamic and static ocular barriers. Extending contact time while improving the efficiency of therapeutic molecules' interaction with ocular tissues could help overcome some of the limitations associated with conventional aqueous eye drops. This formulation philosophy positions Suria Eye Products at the intersection of nanotechnology, pharmaceutical science and patient-oriented ophthalmic care," shares Tamilvanan Shunmugaperumal, Founder and Director.
Building a Research-Led Pharmaceutical Enterprise
Moving an advanced formulation from research concept to pharmaceutical product requires more than demonstrating scientific novelty. Suria Eye Products approaches this transition through an integrated development framework that considers formulation science, regulatory expectations, manufacturing feasibility, team capabilities, and commercial requirements.
A key principle is aligning research with a clearly defined product objective. Rather than allowing development to remain purely exploratory, the company focuses on establishing product requirements and development milestones to guide formulation optimization quality considerations, regulatory planning, and eventual commercialization Regulatory and quality requirements are consequently considered from the early stages of development, particularly in areas such as sterility, biocompatibility, reproducibility and scale-up.
This approach reflects the realities of ophthalmic product development, where a promising laboratory formulation must ultimately demonstrate consistency, safety, stability and manufacturability. “Suria Eye Products' research portfolio, including eight research grants and four fellowships, along with its patent and publication record, provides an intellectual-property and scientific foundation for this progression. Its experience in commercializing one product in the European market also adds practical perspective to the journey from pharmaceutical research to market,” speaks Suriaprabha Marchan, Co-founder and Director.
Expanding the Ophthalmic Pipeline
Looking ahead, Suria Eye Products aims to strengthen its position as a research-driven ophthalmic formulation enterprise by advancing its nanotechnology-based pipeline and taking its innovations closer to commercialisation. The company's focus remains on developing delivery systems to address unmet needs in ocular therapy, particularly where conventional formulations are constrained by poor residence time, limited absorption, or formulation incompatibilities.
Its dual drug nanocapsule platform represents one such opportunity, combining formulation engineering with a therapeutic strategy designed around synergistic action. Continued research, intellectual property development, regulatory preparedness, and product development will be important as the company works to translate these technologies into accessible eye care solutions.
For Suria Eye Products, the larger opportunity lies not simply in developing another ophthalmic product, but in demonstrating how advanced drug-delivery science can reshape the performance and practicality of ocular therapeutics. By carrying its research orientation into product development and commercialization Suria Eye Products is building a platform where pharmaceutical innovation is ultimately measured by its ability to move from the laboratory to meaningful patient care.
