Lupin has received a key FDA approval that strengthens its position in sleep disorder drugs. The approval covers its generic Pitolisant Tablets for the US market.
The latest regulatory clearance allows Lupin to market Pitolisant Tablets in 4.45 mg and 17.8 mg strengths. The product is bioequivalent to Wakix, the reference listed drug.
The development gives Lupin another opportunity to expand its presence in the US pharmaceutical market. It also adds a specialized product to the company’s portfolio.
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Lupin’s Abbreviated New Drug Application for Pitolisant Tablets. The tablets are available in 4.45 mg and 17.8 mg strengths. Pitolisant is used for conditions linked to narcolepsy and excessive daytime sleepiness.
The reference product, Wakix, contains the same active ingredient. The FDA previously approved pitolisant in 2019 for excessive daytime sleepiness in adults with narcolepsy. Its approved uses have since expanded to include cataplexy and pediatric patients.
The key points include:
The approval strengthens Lupin’s presence in generic drugs and specialized CNS treatments. It also gives the company another product for the competitive US market. Lupin had earlier received tentative FDA approval for the same product in March. The company said the tablets would be manufactured at its Nagpur facility.
The move is important because the US remains a major market for Indian pharmaceutical companies. FDA approvals can help drugmakers expand their product offerings. Pitolisant also gives Lupin exposure to a specialized treatment segment. Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that affects normal sleep-wake patterns.

The approval comes as Lupin continues to build its presence in the US pharmaceutical market. The company has a broad portfolio covering generics, complex generics, biotechnology products, and active pharmaceutical ingredients.
The company operates across more than 100 markets worldwide. Its US business remains an important part of its global strategy. The latest approval could also increase competition around pitolisant once the generic reaches the market. Generic competition can create more treatment options and potentially improve affordability.
For Lupin, the approval adds another product to its growing CNS drugs portfolio. It also highlights the company’s focus on regulated markets and complex products. With the FDA clearance, Lupin moves closer to strengthening its position in sleep disorder drugs and the wider US generics market.
