The Foundayo pill, developed by Eli Lilly, has gained European regulatory backing.
The move brings Eli Lilly’s oral obesity treatment closer to wider market access and highlights a practical difference in how patients can take the medicine.
The European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has recommended marketing authorization for Foundayo, whose active ingredient is orforglipron.
Unlike oral Wegovy, which must be taken on an empty stomach with a prescribed waiting period of 8 hours before eating or drinking, Foundayo can be taken once daily without food or water restrictions.
The recommendation itself does not mean that the medicine is already available throughout the European Union.
Foundayo pill belongs to the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist class drugs, which helps regulate appetite and food intake.
Its oral formulation offers an alternative to injectable obesity medicines and introduces greater flexibility into daily dosing.
Key differences in administration include:

A medicine that does not require a specific fasting window may be simpler to coordinate with breakfast, work schedules and other daily activities.
For oral obesity treatments, this difference could be relevant for patients who struggle to maintain a fixed morning routine.
However, convenience alone doesn’t guarantee improved adherence or superior clinical outcome; that requires patient studies and real-world data.
Treatment decisions must also account for effectiveness, tolerability, contraindications and the prescribing information for each medicine.
The CHMP recommendation strengthens Eli Lilly’s position in the expanding market for oral GLP-1 therapy. Foundayo has also received approval in the United States, where it offers an additional option alongside the company’s injectable obesity medicines.
The next milestone is the European Commission’s decision on marketing authorization. Until that process is completed, the CHMP opinion should be described as a recommendation rather than final EU approval.
For the wider pharmaceutical industry, Foundayo illustrates how competition in obesity treatment is extending beyond weight-loss efficacy to include formulation and ease of administration.
