 India Healthcare: Key Funding and Partnership Deals This Week, India Pharma Outlook

India’s healthcare sector saw major funding, partnerships, investments, expansion plans, and pharma developments this week.

KKR moved to acquire Medicover India in a USD 1.5 billion healthcare deal. Cipla and Rocket India announced INR 300 crore expansion plans in Karnataka.

Aurobindo Pharma entered the biologics manufacturing race with a USD 200 million revenue target. Glenmark is targeting USD 600 million from its cancer drug pipeline over five years.

Gland Pharma and Neuland Laboratories signed a long-term sterile API CDMO partnership. Meanwhile, PayU and Marg ERP joined hands to improve digital payments for pharma distributors. Healthcare mutual funds also posted strong returns during the period.

KKR to Acquire Medicover India in USD 1.5 Billion Deal

KKR is set to acquire Medicover India in a deal valued at about USD 1.5 billion.  The transaction covers 100% of the Indian business from existing shareholders. KKR will spend around INR 13,000-14,000 crore, including fresh capital for growth and debt repayment. Around INR 3,000-4,000 crore of the amount will enter the company as primary capital.

Medicover India operates 26 hospitals with more than 6,000 beds across four states.  The acquisition marks KKR's third major hospital investment in India within three years. KKR is targeting India's rising healthcare spending and demand for tertiary care services. The company expects Medicover's expansion to support higher revenue and operating performance.

Cipla and Rocket India Announce INR 300 Crore Karnataka Expansion

Cipla and Rocket India announced INR 300 crore in fresh investments across Karnataka.  Cipla will invest INR 200 crore to expand its Bommasandra manufacturing facility in Bengaluru. Rocket India will invest INR 100 crore to expand its Gokak plant in Belagavi. Cipla has already started work, with expanded production expected by December 2026.

Rocket India's facility manufactures plant-based protein products using maize as its key raw material. The company has received assurances about adequate maize supplies from the state. Rocket India is also considering a Global Capability Centre in Bengaluru. Blackstone is separately exploring data centers, renewable energy and fiber-optic infrastructure investments.

SBI Healthcare Opportunities Fund Leads Sectoral Mutual Funds

SBI Healthcare Opportunities Fund delivered an 18.9% one-year CAGR, leading healthcare sectoral funds.  The fund also delivered a 23.3% CAGR over three years, according to ACE MF data. Mirae Asset Healthcare Fund followed with a 17.9% one-year return. DSP Healthcare Fund recorded a 12.4% one-year return during the same period.

SBI Healthcare Opportunities Fund managed assets worth INR 4,997.7 crore as of August 3. Its one-year return exceeded its benchmark by 14.5 percentage points. The benchmark delivered a 4.4% return during the same period. The data covers sectoral funds with minimum assets under management of INR 1,500 crore.

Aurobindo Pharma Sets USD 200 Million Biologics Revenue Target

Aurobindo Pharma has set a USD 200 million revenue target for its TheraNym biologics venture.  The company recently inaugurated the facility at Borapatla in Telangana. Aurobindo invested about INR 1,200 crore in the biologics manufacturing facility. TheraNym includes 15 KL bioreactors, processing lines and aseptic fill-finish systems.

A second unit will expand capacity through 60 KL bioreactors. The combined facilities could generate USD 150-200 million revenue by 2032. Aurobindo also plans to launch 10 biosimilars by 2030. The company is shifting further toward high-value biologics and biosimilar manufacturing.

Glenmark Targets USD 600 Million From Cancer Drug Pipeline

Glenmark is targeting up to USD 600 million in revenue from cancer drug launches.  The company expects these revenues from its oncology pipeline over five years. Glenmark is focusing on differentiated therapies across several cancer segments. The company plans launches across developed and emerging international markets.

The strategy supports Glenmark's broader shift toward specialty pharmaceuticals. The oncology portfolio is expected to reduce dependence on traditional generic medicines. Glenmark is investing in research, clinical development and regulatory approvals. Successful launches could also improve the company's product mix and margins.

Gland Pharma and Neuland Sign Sterile API CDMO Partnership

Gland Pharma and Neuland Laboratories have entered a long-term sterile API CDMO partnership.  Gland Pharma will build a dedicated sterile manufacturing suite in Visakhapatnam. The facility will support Neuland's requirements for complex sterile APIs. These APIs will be used in microparticle depot products and other injectables.

The new facility will add about 1,400 kg of annual manufacturing capacity. It will meet cGMP, US FDA and European Union standards. The partnership combines Neuland's API expertise with Gland Pharma's sterile manufacturing capabilities. Both companies expect the deal to strengthen global supply reliability for pharmaceutical customers.

Gland Pharma Executive Chairman Srinivas Sadu said the investment would strengthen the companies sterile API capabilities and help meet increasing customer demand through a scalable CDMO offering.

Neuland Laboratories Managing Director & CEO Saharsh Davuluri said demand for sterile APIs is rising as pharmaceutical companies develop more complex injectable therapies.

PayU and Marg ERP Partner to Improve Pharma Payments

PayU and Marg ERP have partnered to improve digital payments for pharma distributors.  The partnership integrates PayU's payment infrastructure into Marg ERP's workflow. The system will support digital collections, invoicing and automated payment reconciliation.

Retailers can generate dynamic QR codes linked to individual invoices. Distributors can create payment links and reconcile payments bill by bill. The system will post reconciled payments directly into the ERP platform. The companies expect faster collections and same-day settlements for businesses. The partnership will also support Marg's eRetail application for B2B ordering and payments.

“Digital payments are integral to how businesses operate, yet collections and reconciliation remain fragmented and laborious. Together with Marg ERP, we aim to simplify financial administration and bring more predictability to the cash flow of Indian pharma distributors and retailers. This deepens Marg ERP’s role in digitising the pharma sector while expanding PayU’s positioning as an embedded finance aggregator,” said Vineet Sethi, Chief Growth and Marketing Officer, PayU.

Cancer drugs and biosimilars are becoming important growth areas for Indian companies. Partnerships are also improving sterile API production and pharma distribution payments. Together, these developments point to continued investment across healthcare delivery, manufacturing, specialty drugs and digital infrastructure.
