Generic Semaglutide has helped Sun Pharmaceutical Industries expand its global presence with a fresh regulatory win.
The company has secured approval from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) to manufacture and market the drug in South Africa.
Generic Semaglutide is approved for adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus. The treatment is meant to be used along with diet and exercise. The approval makes South Africa the second country after India to clear Sun Pharma's version of the diabetes drug.
The company said it plans to launch the product in South Africa in the coming days. The medicine will be available as a pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen. It will be offered in two strengths. These include 2 mg/1.5 mL and 4 mg/3 mL. The formulation supports flexible, once-weekly dosing for eligible patients.
The latest approval strengthens Sun Pharma's position in the growing diabetes treatment market. Demand for semaglutide-based medicines has increased worldwide. The drug belongs to a class called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Sun Pharma's product is designed for weekly use. The multi-dose pen allows doctors to adjust doses based on patient needs. This approach also helps improve treatment adherence.

The approval is important because semaglutide remains one of the most sought-after diabetes treatments. More generic options can improve patient access in several markets.
South Africa has a large number of people living with type 2 diabetes. Affordable treatment options can help more patients receive modern therapy. The approval also reflects Sun Pharma's growing expertise in developing complex generic medicines.
Unlike standard tablets, semaglutide injections require advanced manufacturing capabilities. Companies must meet strict quality and regulatory standards before receiving approval. Sun Pharma's latest clearance demonstrates its ability to meet these requirements.
The company received approval for its generic semaglutide in India earlier. The South African approval marks another step in its international expansion strategy.
Commenting on the development, Aalok Shanghvi, Chief Operating Officer of Sun Pharma, said South Africa is the second market after India to approve the company's generic semaglutide.
He said the approval reflects Sun Pharma's ability to develop complex generic medicines that meet stringent quality standards across different markets. He added that the company remains committed to improving access to generic medicines. He also said Sun Pharma aims to make evidence-based treatment options available to patients and healthcare professionals.
With the South African launch expected shortly, Sun Pharma is set to strengthen its presence in the country's diabetes market. The approval also supports the company's broader strategy of expanding its complex generics business across global markets.
