TheraNym Biologics, a contract manufacturing arm of Aurobindo Pharma, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art biologics manufacturing facility in Telangana with an investment of Rs 1,200 crore, marking a significant expansion in India’s advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities.
Located at Borpatla village in Sangareddy district, the facility is expected to support global pharmaceutical supply chains while reinforcing Telangana’s position as a major biotechnology hub and life sciences centre.
The launch of the new facility represents Aurobindo Pharma’s strategic entry into biologics contract manufacturing, a high-growth segment focused on advanced therapies for complex diseases.
The plant will manufacture biologic medicines used in the treatment of cancer and other life-threatening conditions, catering to domestic demand as well as exports to international markets, including the United States, subject to regulatory approvals.
Major Boost to Biologics Manufacturing in India
TheraNym Biologics has been designed to meet international regulatory standards, enabling the company to manufacture advanced therapeutics for leading pharmaceutical firms worldwide. The facility will serve as a dedicated contract manufacturing organisation (CMO), offering large-scale biologics production capabilities to global drugmakers. MSD, known as Merck & Co. in the United States and Canada, has already joined as the anchor customer for the new facility, underscoring confidence in India’s growing biopharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities.
Industry experts view the investment as an important step for Aurobindo Pharma as it diversifies beyond traditional generics and strengthens its footprint in biosimilars, biologic medicines, and next-generation therapies. The company has indicated that the facility will play a critical role in supporting the supply chains of leading global pharmaceutical companies while enhancing India’s standing in the biologics segment.
Apart from strengthening healthcare innovation and manufacturing, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities for more than 1,500 local youth, contributing to economic growth and skill development in the region. Telangana government officials have highlighted the facility as another major investment that enhances the state’s growing reputation as a preferred destination for pharmaceutical manufacturing and biotechnology companies.
Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu, who inaugurated the facility, said the state is working to transform Hyderabad and surrounding regions into a global centre for advanced medical research and manufacturing, spanning biologics, vaccines, cell and gene therapy, and cancer treatments. The government is also developing a broader ecosystem through initiatives such as life sciences policies and infrastructure aimed at attracting international investment into biotechnology.
