BASF and Beyond Suncare express their approval of the World Health Organization's (WHO) decision to incorporate broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF into the 24th edition of the Model List of Essential Medicines (EML) and the 10th edition of the Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (EMLc).

The addition of broad-spectrum sunscreen to the WHO EML and EMLc is a result of an application submitted in November 2024 by the Global Albinism Alliance, in collaboration with the United Nations Independent Expert on the Enjoyment of Human Rights by Persons with Albinism, the Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change, along with esteemed collaborators and dedicated partners who collectively presented a comprehensive, evidence-based application to the WHO, which included Beyond Suncare.

This inclusion is expected to motivate countries to prioritize sunscreen within their health systems, thereby enhancing access and affordability. “This landmark decision elevates the importance of sun protection for vulnerable populations.

As we move forward, the collaboration between organizations, healthcare professionals, and advocates will be crucial in ensuring that everyone, especially those with albinism, can access the essential protection they deserve,” said Mafalda Soto, Executive Director of Beyond Suncare. “Together, we are not just protecting skin; we are safeguarding lives and promoting a future in which every individual can thrive under the sun.”

“The decision to list broad-spectrum sunscreens to the list of ‘Essential Medicine’ underlines the importance of safe and effective sun protection products. It empowers producers of sunscreens and UV-filter ingredients to promote and defend their products in an environment of changing regulations and rising skepticism from consumers,” said Dr Ulrich Issberner, Director Market Development Suncare at BASF.
