Why India's Pharma Manufacturing Boom Needs More Women in Core Plant Operations

Diversity Alone Will Not Improve USFDA Compliance

There is a temptation to make this argument too simple. It would be easy to say that having more women on the factory floor will automatically lead to fewer deviations or better USFDA inspection results. However, that claim is not supported by strong evidence.

A diverse workforce cannot compensate for poor SOPs, inadequate cleaning procedures, weak data systems or insufficient employee training. It also cannot replace effective quality oversight. USFDA compliance depends on the entire manufacturing system, from equipment and procedures to documentation, employee behaviour and quality management.

That does not weaken the case for women in manufacturing. In fact, it makes the argument more practical. If a company wants the strongest possible manufacturing workforce, it should not unnecessarily exclude qualified people from production roles.

For India’s pharma manufacturing industry, the priority should be to expand the talent pool while giving every employee the training, equipment and systems needed to perform safely and consistently.

The Bigger Opportunity for India’s Pharma Manufacturing Sector

India's pharmaceutical industry is entering a period where scale and complexity will grow together.

Companies are investing in APIs, CDMO operations, formulation capacity and vaccine manufacturing, while automation is becoming more common across production facilities. At the same time, global customers and regulators are demanding consistent quality, stronger documentation and tighter contamination controls.

All of this requires skilled people. The country already has a large base of women entering STEM education, but the challenge is turning that educational participation into long-term careers across the full pharmaceutical value chain.

For women in core plant operations, that means looking beyond traditional laboratory and research roles.

The opportunity extends to the factory floor, cleanrooms, API synthesis, packaging, maintenance, automation and plant leadership. These functions are not separate from the future of India's pharmaceutical industry. They are becoming an increasingly important part of it.
