The pharmaceutical industry's growing emphasis on controlled drug release, formulation precision and patient-centric therapies is strengthening the relevance of finished pellet formulations. Multiparticulate systems offer pharmaceutical companies greater flexibility in designing immediate, sustained and modified-release products while enabling more controlled drug-release profiles.
As regulatory expectations rise alongside demand for specialized dosage forms, manufacturers need to combine formulation science with consistent quality, scalable production and dependable delivery.
Positioned within this specialized segment is Pelcoat, a pharmaceutical formulation company that has developed considerable depth in finished pellets, particularly sustained- and modified-release formulations. From approximately 30 products at the beginning of its journey to around 300 today, the company has expanded through focused R&D, manufacturing investments and disciplined product development.
With around 40 licensed sustained-release products and approvals from several prominent pharmaceutical companies, Pelcoat is building its position around three fundamentals: quality, cost effectiveness and timely delivery.
Building a Specialized Formulation Business
Pelcoat's development is closely connected to the professional journey of Vamsi Krishna, CEO, Pelcoat. A science graduate with an MBA, Vamsi began his career in the automobile industry through campus recruitment. After four years, he transitioned into technical sales, bringing his professional career closer to his scientific background. By the age of 26, he was heading operations for Andhra Pradesh.
After gaining around a decade of industry experience, Vamsi decided to pursue entrepreneurship. His first venture involved supplying raw materials and chemicals to pharmaceutical companies. The business provided valuable exposure to pharmaceutical customers and market requirements, but after approximately four years in trading, he wanted to establish a stronger identity through manufacturing.
That ambition eventually shaped Pelcoat. The facility traces its origins to an R&D plant established in 2007, while the current entrepreneurial journey began in 2015. The company has since evolved under a family-led management structure.
Vamsi oversees marketing, technical functions and production, while his wife, a partner in the company, manages finance and commercial operations. Their daughter, a pharmaceutical engineering graduate from CBIT, Hyderabad, also worked with Pelcoat for two years before moving to the United States for higher education.
Over the years, the company has recorded approximately 20 percent annual growth while expanding its portfolio tenfold—from around 30 products to approximately 300. Pelcoat's progress, however, has been driven not merely by portfolio expansion but by developing specialization in technically demanding pharmaceutical formulations.

Building Depth in Sustained-Release Pellets
Pelcoat's principal capabilities encompass immediate-release, sustained-release and modified-release pellets. Sustained-release formulations, in particular, have emerged as one of its strongest areas of specialization.
“The company currently holds licenses for around 40 products in this category. This established portfolio assumes greater significance as regulatory requirements for specialized formulations become increasingly demanding. According to the company, evolving bioequivalence requirements have increased both the investment and technical preparation required to bring individual sustained-release formulations to market”, speaks Vamsi Krishna.
Rather than positioning itself primarily as a conventional job-work, contract manufacturing or loan-licensing company, Pelcoat focuses on manufacturing and supplying products from its own portfolio. This approach allows the company to build formulation knowledge while developing long-term value around its product base.
An important validation of this strategy comes from its relationships with established pharmaceutical companies. Pelcoat is an approved source for several prominent manufacturers, and some large pharmaceutical companies with their own production capabilities procure selected pellet formulations from Pelcoat for use in their finished capsules.
Competing in product categories that also attract much larger pharmaceutical manufacturers has been one of the company's significant challenges. Pelcoat has addressed this by concentrating on areas where a specialized manufacturer can create tangible value - consistent quality, competitive economics and dependable delivery.
The company also credits its people for sustaining this performance. Several key team members have remained in their respective departments for seven to eight years. This continuity has created valuable institutional and process knowledge, strengthening execution as the company has scaled.
R&D and Manufacturing Excellence
Research and development sits at the center of Pelcoat's strategy for maintaining a relevant product pipeline. Its development philosophy is distinctly forward-looking, with the company tracking upcoming market opportunities and preparing formulations ahead of time.
When an important pharmaceutical product approaches patent expiry, for instance, Pelcoat aims to have its formulation ready approximately a year beforehand. The product is commercialized only when legally permissible, but completing development in advance enables the company to enter the market more efficiently once the opportunity becomes available.
During formulation development, Pelcoat focuses on achieving performance comparable to the innovator product. This combination of advance planning and formulation expertise enables the company to continuously expand its portfolio while preparing for future pharmaceutical requirements.
Manufacturing modernization is progressing alongside R&D. Pelcoat has moved from smaller batch capacities toward larger equipment capable of handling batches of approximately 500, compared with earlier batch sizes of around 100 to 200. The increase is designed to substantially improve output and support growing customer demand.
“The company operates five dedicated manufacturing modules, allowing individual products to move through defined manufacturing environments from the beginning to the completion of the process. Pelcoat is also progressively aligning products that previously followed internal specifications with recognized standards such as the United States Pharmacopeia and British Pharmacopoeia, wherever applicable”, highlights Vamsi Krishna.
Analytical capabilities are being strengthened through upgraded equipment, including higher-end HPLC systems. These investments are intended to improve the reliability of testing and support increasingly stringent quality requirements.
Strengthening Quality through Technology
For Pelcoat, capacity expansion is being accompanied by greater process control and traceability. The company is introducing PLC-based manufacturing equipment as part of its technology modernization programme.
Programmable Logic Controller systems provide machine-generated process information and stronger audit support, enabling manufacturing data to be retrieved and reviewed when required. By reducing dependence on manually generated information, such systems can support greater transparency, traceability and process consistency.
“These technology investments are particularly relevant as pharmaceutical customers place increasing emphasis on documentation, data integrity and reproducible manufacturing. Pelcoat's approach is therefore to improve not only how much it can manufacture but also the systems through which quality is controlled and demonstrated”, adds Vamsi Krishna.
This focus has helped the company establish credibility among larger pharmaceutical customers despite operating in a highly competitive environment. Its proposition remains grounded in the ability to provide cost-effective products without compromising quality or delivery commitments.
Pelcoat's performance has also received recognition outside its immediate customer ecosystem. The company was recognized by its banking partner as a leading SME account within its cluster—an acknowledgement of the business progress it has achieved while scaling its operations.
From Pellet Specialist to Broader Formulation Enterprise
The next two to three years are expected to mark a significant transition for Pelcoat. The company is developing a new manufacturing facility with approximately five times the capacity of its existing plant, while its broader expansion initiatives are expected to substantially increase overall manufacturing capability.
Alongside capacity growth, Pelcoat plans to extend its presence beyond pellets into finished dosage forms. Capsules and tablets represent the immediate priorities, with the company intending to introduce finished formulations under its own branding.
“Over the longer term, Pelcoat envisions expanding into a wider spectrum of pharmaceutical formulations, including additional therapeutic products, ointments and parenterals. The goal is to evolve from a company primarily recognized for pellet formulations into a more diversified pharmaceutical formulation enterprise”, shares Vamsi Krishna.
For Vamsi Krishna, the coming years are about building on Pelcoat's established strengths rather than moving away from them. Its approximately 300-product portfolio, sustained-release expertise, R&D capabilities, manufacturing upgrades and relationships with established pharmaceutical companies provide the foundation for this next phase.
As pharmaceutical manufacturing moves toward greater specialization, automation and regulatory rigor, Pelcoat is preparing to scale both its capacity and capabilities. By retaining its focus on formulation expertise, quality and dependable execution while progressively broadening its manufacturing footprint, Vamsi Krishna and his team are positioning Pelcoat to translate its strength in finished pellets into a larger role across the pharmaceutical formulation value chain.
