Medical device manufacturing leaves little room for variability. Whether it is laser processing, coating, surface treatment, inspection or assembly, the equipment behind these processes must deliver precision repeatedly while accommodating increasingly sophisticated device designs.
For manufacturers, the challenge is therefore moving beyond standalone machinery towards production systems where engineering, automation, process control and quality work together seamlessly.
Established in 2009, Saher Technologies operates within this demanding space as a specialized medical device manufacturing equipment company. Its journey has been shaped by a clear observation: many critical medical device processes cannot be effectively addressed with standard, off-the-shelf machinery.
Different devices, materials and production requirements often demand customised engineering. Saher Technologies consequently built its proposition around solving manufacturing problems rather than simply supplying equipment, developing capabilities spanning machine development, automation, software, coating, laser processing, surface treatment, finishing, inspection and testing.
Driving this engineering-led approach is Yavar Pothiawala, Managing Director, whose Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics & Communication is complemented by extensive technical training in diagnostic X-ray, radiographic and fluoroscopic systems in the US. Before Saher Technologies, he spent 10 years with Sahajanand Technologies as President.
He also holds a US patent for a method and system for coating insertable medical devices. Working alongside him are Moin Hadiyawala, Technical Executive and Ahmed Pothiawala Sales Executive, supporting the company's customer engagement and market-facing efforts.

Engineering Around the Process, Not Just the Machine
Saher Technologies' evolution has been guided by an understanding that medical device manufacturers ultimately require a reliable production process, not merely a piece of machinery. This distinction influences how the company approaches every engagement.
Before developing equipment, its team examines the device, material, process sequence, production volume, quality expectations, infrastructure, operator requirements and potential for future scale. The objective is to identify the underlying manufacturing challenge before determining the engineering response.
“Successful engineering is not simply about developing a technically advanced machine - it is about creating a complete solution that is practical, repeatable, cost-effective, and capable of meeting stringent quality requirements,” says Yavar.
This philosophy also shapes day-to-day execution. Engineering, machine development, automation, software, assembly and technical support are treated as interconnected capabilities. Particular emphasis is placed on design discipline, validation, documentation, testing and repeatability, while practical considerations such as usability, maintenance, productivity, scalability and cost remain integral to equipment development.
Building Complementary Capabilities
Rather than expanding into unrelated technologies, Saher Technologies has progressively added capabilities that address connected stages of medical device production. Its portfolio today encompasses stent and balloon coating machines, stent cutting and annealing machines, hydrophilic coating, electropolishing, plasma treatment, inspection and customised automation.
The logic behind this expansion is process-oriented. Performance at one stage can influence outcomes elsewhere: laser processing, surface treatment, coating and inspection can collectively affect manufacturing consistency and productivity. Developing complementary expertise therefore allows Saher Technologies to examine a production challenge more comprehensively.
“The company extends this approach beyond equipment development through support in manufacturing setup, technology selection, automation, process optimisation and technical implementation. Its engineers work closely with customers as processes progress from development or laboratory environments into production, where practical challenges around repeatability and scale frequently emerge,” speaks Yavar.
This depth has become especially important as device designs and customer requirements grow more complex. Saher Technologies responded by strengthening expertise across engineering, machining, software, process development, coating, laser processing, surface treatment, inspection and testing rather than relying on machine-building capabilities alone.
Preparing for a More Automated Manufacturing Future
As India's medical device ecosystem advances towards localisation and more sophisticated domestic manufacturing, Saher Technologies expects precision engineering, automation and process integration to become increasingly important. The company sees the industry gradually progressing from conventional standalone machinery towards integrated manufacturing systems.
Automation, in this environment, is expected to extend deeper into laser processing, coating, surface treatment, finishing, inspection, testing and assembly. Supporting that transition will require equipment manufacturers to strengthen capabilities in motion control, sensors, machine vision, robotics, software and real-time process monitoring.
“Saher Technologies' next phase is aligned with this evolution. The company intends to become a more comprehensive technology and manufacturing partner, strengthening advanced capabilities in laser processing, hydrophilic coating, surface treatment, finishing, inspection, testing and specialized manufacturing systems. Its focus is also on deeper automation and process expertise, strategic partnerships and broader support for medical device manufacturers across India and international markets,” shares Yavar.
Importantly, growth is not being defined simply by the number of machines in its portfolio. Saher Technologies is working towards greater capability across the entire journey - from process development and application-specific equipment design to automation, installation, optimisation and production scale-up. As medical devices become more sophisticated, that integrated engineering approach positions the company to address an equally sophisticated manufacturing challenge: turning precision into a consistently repeatable production process.
