Abbott, a multinational healthcare corporation, introduced the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor, which provides automatic glucose readings every minute directly to a person's phone, enabling diabetics to confidently, accurately, and easily control their disease.
India has 101 million people living with diabetes and is the second largest diabetes population, which should alarm anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of the presence of diabetes in India. This alarming figure starkly demonstrates the need for tools like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) that provide access to real-time, actionable information necessary for people to take control of their diabetes management. Proper glucose monitoring is essential to manage diabetes and reduce the risk of complications (along with medication in some cases), said the company.
“FreeStyle Libre technology is transforming the way diabetes is managed for over seven million individuals across the globe. We are thrilled to introduce this life-changing innovation to India, where it holds immense potential to empower people to be able to manage the condition better,” said Dr. Kenneth Lee, regional medical affairs director, Asia Pacific, Diabetes Division, Abbott.

“The device performance meets robust accuracy standards to ensure reliable glucose readings for all intended patient populations and glycaemic ranges. It gives people the freedom to monitor their glucose levels without routine fingersticks, helping them make more informed decisions,” said Dr Lee. According to studies, FreeStyle Libre technology can help lower HbA1c levels by 0.9% to 1.5%, reduce hospital visits by 66%, and even minimize low blood sugar episodes by up to 43%.
