NITI Aayog steps in to release a national strategy on popularizing Ayurveda as a global evidence-based healthcare system. This attempt is to transform traditional healthcare in India into a globally accepted system.
This study was undertaken by the healthcare division of NITI Aayog along with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). This project’s goal also aligns with the Viksit Bharat (2047) mission. The roadmap is built on three key principles.
Availability, Acceptability, and Propagation, these three strategic pillars will strengthen the global Ayurveda workforce. Further, the project will expand the export manufacturing and promote international research and development on it.
While strengthening the three strategic pillars, the project also aims to standardize global education on Ayurveda. Such as building a strong scientific research base on the discipline, thereby harmonizing regulations with international standards.
“The globalization of Ayurveda presents a unique opportunity to establish India as a global leader in traditional medicine. While also unlocking substantial economic value, creating employment and strengthening exports. Thereby reinforcing India’s cultural and knowledge-based soft power”, said the Vice Chairman, Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri, NITI Aayog.
One of the major recommendations is again the standardization of medicine, to ensure safety and quality. Through strengthening certification, following the regulatory compliance will build the credibility of Ayurvedic Medicine will be built across the globe.

If the roadmap is implemented successfully, then the impact will go beyond the Ayurvedic Healthcare system. It will also flourish the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry as a whole. The direct beneficiaries will include the Nutraceutical companies, herbal export companies, and the Ayurveda drug manufacturers.
This strategy also aims in partnership with global academic institutions, healthcare organizations and research bodies, to further promote knowledge exchange and collaborative research. Along with this, it also recommends the modernization of Ayurveda education to expand the skill development program to train the practitioners.

Understanding the current demand for preventive healthcare solutions, the project calls for a strong brand awareness. This is to position Ayurvedic healthcare as a holistic approach to health and wellness. This project will aid India’s approach to becoming a leading advisory in traditional medicine.
