Dr. Hemant G. Koshia, Commissioner of the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) stated that the Gujarat government is in the final stage of approving a high-tech drug testing laboratory in Surat. Once approved, the Gujarat Medical Services Corporation Limited (GMSCL) will proceed with presenting about the lab’s construction and advanced equipment procurement, funded by the state government.
The 2,500-sq. Meter plot in Surat’s prime zone as planned; the lab will enhance regional healthcare infrastructure and drug quality assurance. "This lab will significantly improve drug testing capacity in South Gujarat and contribute to public health safety statewide," Dr. Koshia noted.
The Surat lab is part of Gujarat’s wider initiative to expand and modernize its pharmaceutical testing capabilities. Alongside Surat, new labs are coming up in Rajkot and Ahmedabad. Since May 2023, Vadodara’s microbiological drug testing facility has already been upgraded to the operational sector.
Rajkot’s facility is about to complete with infrastructure and equipment installation in the final stages under GMSCL’s oversight. Meanwhile, Ahmedabad is about to host a state-of-the-art food and drug testing center within three years, with an initial budget of Rs. 12.33 crore allocated for the current fiscal year.

Vadodara’s modernized drug testing lab, developed at a cost of Rs. 48 crore, spans 16,000 square meters and is known as Asia’s largest microbiological drug testing center. It features cutting-edge cleanroom environments and follows global pharmaceutical testing standard.
These strategic projects strengthen Gujarat’s leadership in pharmaceutical regulation, allowing faster, more accurate testing and supporting public trust in drug quality and safety.
