Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the Nuclear Medicine Block with PET scan at IGMC Shimla today, marking a major upgrade in the state’s public healthcare system.
The facility at Indira Gandhi Medical College is the first of its kind in a government hospital in Himachal Pradesh, bringing advanced diagnostic services closer to patients.
The Nuclear Medicine Block IGMC Shimla is expected to cut down the need for patients to travel outside the state for critical tests.
The newly opened unit offers PET scan services, a key technology used for early detection of diseases, especially cancer. Unlike conventional imaging, PET scans work at the molecular level, helping doctors identify issues earlier, track disease progression, and evaluate treatment response more accurately.

For years, patients from Himachal Pradesh had to travel to other states for such advanced diagnostics. With the Nuclear Medicine Block IGMC Shimla, access becomes quicker, more affordable, and less stressful for patients and their families. This is likely to improve timely diagnosis and treatment outcomes across the state.
The Chief Minister also announced Rs 8 crore for installing a SPECT-CT machine at IGMC. The initiative is part of a larger plan to invest around Rs 3,000 crore in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh.
The launch reflects the state’s push to bring modern medical technology into government hospitals and improve access to quality care for its residents.
