RIMS Imphal upgrade set to strengthen Manipur’s healthcare system after Union Health Minister JP Nadda agrees to elevate the institute to AIIMS status.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh confirms the decision following talks in New Delhi. The move promises better advanced care, medical education and research facilities for the state and the wider Northeast.
Officials also clear a proposal for a new medical college in Senapati district. This dual development boosts tertiary healthcare capacity and medical training. Patients across the region stand to gain improved access to specialized services.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh meets Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda in New Delhi. During the discussion, Nadda agrees to upgrade the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal to All India Institute of Medical Sciences status.
Singh shares the update on social media and thanks the Union minister for supporting healthcare improvements in the state. The decision marks a major step for tertiary care and medical education in Manipur.

Nadda also agreed to approve the proposal for a new medical college in Senapati district. The development follows an earlier commitment from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Shah had agreed to lay the foundation stone of the Senapati Medical College during his planned visit to Manipur in the first week of October.
Together, the two decisions expand medical training capacity and improve healthcare access in hill districts.
RIMS Imphal began operations on 14 September 1972 as a premier government medical college and tertiary-care teaching hospital. The 192-acre campus houses 1,074 beds. It handles more than 2.4 lakh outpatients and records over 31,000 indoor admissions each year. The institute offers MBBS and postgraduate programs along with a College of Nursing and a Dental College.
AIIMS status will enhance specialized treatment, medical education, research, and overall healthcare delivery. The upgrade positions RIMS as a stronger tertiary-care hub for the Northeast.
The RIMS Imphal upgrade and the new Senapati medical college together strengthen Manipur’s healthcare system in meaningful ways. AIIMS status brings higher standards of care, advanced facilities and expanded training opportunities.
