Roche bets USD 2 billion on easy-to-take oral heart and metabolic pills.
Swiss drugmaker Roche has signed discovery collaboration with Atavistik Bio that could reach nearly USD 2 billion, including milestones.
The partners will develop oral treatments for cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic diseases. Atavistik will apply its proprietary technology to locate hidden pockets on disease-causing proteins.
These sites often remain out of reach for conventional methods. The approach targets regulatory sites rather than the main active site of proteins and aims to produce more selective oral medicines.
Atavistik will keep advancing its own rare blood disorder programs while Roche drives later development and commercialization. This deal gives Roche access to a discovery modality focused on convenient oral options for major chronic diseases.
Atavistik will receive USD 70 million upfront. The company can earn up to USD 1.9 billion in research, development, and commercial milestone payments, plus royalties on sales of any approved drugs. The partnership covers multiple drug targets.
Key elements of the agreement include:
This structure lets each partner concentrate on its strengths while sharing the upside through milestones and royalties.

Atavistik’s technology finds hidden pockets on disease-causing proteins that conventional approaches frequently miss. Traditional drugs usually bind a protein’s main active site. Atavistik instead targets other sites that regulate how the protein functions.
This method can deliver more selective treatments with fewer unintended effects. Unlocking these regulatory sites, the platform creates a path to oral drugs against targets that earlier techniques struggled to address. Roche is securing access to this capability specifically for oral cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic medicines.
Atavistik remains committed to its core work in rare blood disorder. The company will continue developing treatments for conditions such as hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, which causes malformed blood vessels.
At the same time, the Roche collaboration extends the same platform into cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic diseases. The arrangement supplies capital and external validation while Atavistik preserves full control of its internal rare-disease pipeline. The biotech therefore advances both its original focus and a broader set of opportunities through a single technology platform.
The entire collaboration centers on oral treatments. Patients often prefer tablets over other administration routes for long-term conditions. Atavistik will use its platform to identify candidate molecules suitable for oral dosing.
Roche will then advance those compounds through later testing and potential commercialization. The partners aim to produce convenient oral options for cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic diseases that can fit more easily into patients’ daily routines.
Roche gains a discovery engine designed to generate selective oral candidates against challenging targets. Atavistik receives substantial upfront funding, milestone potential and a major industry partner while continuing its rare blood disorder programs without interruption.
The science focuses on hidden regulatory pockets that conventional methods overlook. The commercial goal focuses on easy-to-take oral pills for heart, kidney and metabolic conditions. Together, these elements define a collaboration that moves beyond the headline value and centers on both novel science and practical patient needs.
