The US FDA clears Sun Pharma’s Ilumya for adults with active psoriatic arthritis, expanding the drug beyond its original 2018 approval for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.
This label expansion turns a proven dermatology treatment into a broader option for patients who develop joint disease.
Roughly 2.4 million Americans live with the condition, and many already have psoriasis.
The decision marks more than a new indication; it signals Sun Pharma’s steady progress from a pure generics player toward a specialty innovator that builds on a single molecule across related diseases.
The approval covers the treatment of active psoriatic arthritis in adults. Sun Pharma’s Ilumya is an IL-23 inhibitor that healthcare providers administer exclusively in the office; patients do not self-inject. Phase 3 INSPIRE-1 and INSPIRE-2 trials supply the supporting evidence.
In both studies, the drug delivers statistically significant improvement in joint symptoms after just two doses at the 24-week mark, measured by the standard ACR20 response rate. Safety findings remain consistent with the established profile from psoriasis use, and the agency flags no new major concerns.

About one in three people with psoriasis develop joint problems that cause pain, swelling, and potential long-term damage. Sun Pharma’s Ilumya therefore offers a practical choice for patients who prefer in-office care or cannot manage self-injection.
The drug joins a growing group of IL-23 treatments, yet its healthcare-provider administration sets it apart by keeping patients engaged with their clinical team. This delivery difference can improve support and monitoring for those who need it most.
The approval advances the company’s innovative medicines portfolio, which already contributes around 20% of sales. Earlier label expansions for scalp and nail psoriasis show a clear pattern of extracting more value from the same molecule.
Richard Ascroft, North America CEO, describes the decision as another important innovative-medicine milestone that builds on the established clinical experience of Sun Pharma’s Ilumya in plaque psoriasis.
The move strengthens the firm’s specialty credentials in the competitive US market and supports the longer-term aim of making the drug a preferred advanced treatment option.
The approval turns a skin drug into a broader psoriatic-disease solution. Sun Pharma’s Ilumya now addresses both skin and joint manifestations of the condition. The real test will be how quickly doctors and patients adopt the new option and whether the expansion helps the company grow its higher-value specialty business.
