Autoimmune drug discovery could gain a research pathway as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) funds a four-year study of 200 families affected by multiple autoimmune conditions.
Led through a network of six medical centers, the project will compare genetic and immune-system differences between affected relatives and unaffected family members.
Researchers aim to identify shared disease mechanisms, potential therapeutic targets and biomarkers linked to susceptibility.
The initiative comes as Indian pharmaceutical research increasingly looks towards precision-led treatment development.
Its longer-term significance may lie in translating genetic research into medicines, diagnostics and opportunities for domestic biotechnology innovators and researchers.
The ICMR-funded project, titled Genomic Profiling and Identification of Targetable Shared Immunopathogenic Events in Multiplex Families with Autoimmune Diseases, will investigate why different autoimmune conditions occur among members of the same family.
The research will involve six institutions: AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Bibinagar, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), St John's Medical College, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences and Kolkata Medical College.
Researchers will collect blood samples from affected individuals and their unaffected relatives. Genomic profiling, cytokine profiling and RNA analysis will help identify genetic variations and immune-system differences that may contribute to disease development.
The study will include conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, myositis, Sjögren's syndrome and type 1 diabetes. For pharmaceutical researchers, the significance lies in identifying biological processes that may be shared across multiple autoimmune conditions.
If common immunological pathways are identified, they could provide starting points for investigating new therapeutic targets.
Broadening autoimmune drug discovery beyond disease-specific research and supporting the development of treatments addressing common mechanisms of immune dysfunction.

The research could create opportunities for Indian pharmaceutical companies to explore new areas of immunology research and targeted autoimmune therapies.
A better understanding of disease mechanisms may help researchers investigate molecules that regulate abnormal immune responses, potentially supporting future drug development programs.
The findings could also contribute to precision medicine by helping scientists understand why patients with similar diagnoses may have different biological characteristics and treatment responses.
Another potential application is autoimmune biomarkers. If researchers identify reliable biological indicators associated with disease susceptibility or progression, these findings could inform diagnostic development and future clinical research.
Academic research identifying promising molecular targets can create opportunities for early-stage companies working in genomics, immunology, computational biology and therapeutic development.
Startups could potentially participate in subsequent research through collaborations involving target validation, drug screening, biomarker development and preclinical investigation.
Partnerships between research institutions and pharmaceutical companies could also help bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and commercially viable drug candidates.
Nevertheless, translating genetic research into medicines involves several stages, including validating biological targets, identifying suitable drug candidates, conducting preclinical studies and progressing through clinical trials.
The four-year research initiative should therefore be viewed as an early scientific foundation rather than an indication that new autoimmune treatments are imminent.
