The Bengaluru-based biopharmaceutical firm has locked in a 10-year supply contract that gives it exclusive access to Brazil’s large public healthcare market for the breast-cancer medicine.

Biocon partners under Brazil’s Productive Development Partnership program and thereby places its biosimilar within reach of the majority of Brazilian patients who depend on government-funded treatment.

The arrangement also opens a pathway for gradual local manufacturing that can further reduce long-term costs and strengthen supply security for HER2-positive breast-cancer care.

Biocon secures exclusive public-market access

Biocon has signed a 10-year supply agreement with Bahiafarma and Bionovis in Brazil under the Productive Development Partnership program. The pact grants the consortium exclusive rights to supply pertuzumab to Brazil’s public healthcare system, which accounts for roughly 70 percent of the country’s total demand for the drug.

• The company will also earn a share of the revenues generated from the Brazil opportunity.
• The product will move through phased localization over the medium to long term.

This structure supports sustained adoption of Biocon’s biosimilar inside the public oncology network while it builds domestic production capacity.

Understanding the medicine and its market importance

Pertuzumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the HER2 protein. It binds to the protein and prevents it from pairing with other proteins that send growth signals, thereby slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Swiss firm Roche markets the original brand, Perjeta, which recorded global sales of more than USD 3.6 billion in 2025. In India, several domestic companies, including Zydus Lifesciences, Dr Reddy’s, Alkem Laboratories and Intas Pharma, already offer biosimilar versions of the same molecule.

He stated that the long-term supply contract marks a significant milestone and will enable Biocon to reach more patients living with HER2-positive breast cancer while addressing a critical healthcare need at scale.

Securing exclusive access to Brazil’s public healthcare system, which serves the majority of Brazilian patients, allows Biocon’s biosimilar to introduce price competition with the originator product. 

The combination of guaranteed public-sector volume and progressive technology transfer therefore creates a realistic route to more affordable pertuzumab therapy for patients who depend on government programs.
